Arginine induces GH gene expression by activating NOS/NO signaling in rat isolated hemi-pituitaries BJMBR
Olinto,S.C.F.; Adrião,M.G.; Castro-Barbosa,T.; Goulart-Silva,F.; Nunes,M.T..
The amino acid arginine (Arg) is a recognized secretagogue of growth hormone (GH), and has been shown to induce GH gene expression. Arg is the natural precursor of nitric oxide (NO), which is known to mediate many of the effects of Arg, such as GH secretion. Arg was also shown to increase calcium influx in pituitary cells, which might contribute to its effects on GH secretion. Although the mechanisms involved in the effects of Arg on GH secretion are well established, little is known about them regarding the control of GH gene expression. We investigated whether the NO pathway and/or calcium are involved in the effects of Arg on GH gene expression in rat isolated pituitaries. To this end, pituitaries from approximately 170 male Wistar rats (~250 g) were...

Contribution of dietary arginine to nitrogen utilisation and excretion in juvenile sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed diets differing in protein source ArchiMer
Tulli, F; Vachot, Christianne; Tibaldi, E; Fournier, Vincent; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
The role of dietary arginine in affecting nitrogen utilisation and excretion was studied in juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed for 72 days with diets differing in protein sources (plant protein-based (PM) and fish-meal-based (FM)). Fish growth performance and nitrogen utilisation revealed that dietary Arg surplus was beneficial only in PM diets. Dietary Arg level significantly affected postprandial plasma urea concentrations. Hepatic arginase activity increased (P < 0.05) in response to dietary Arg surplus in fish fed plant protein diets; conversely ornithine transcarbamylase activity was very low and inversely related to arginine intake. No hepatic carbamoyl phosphate synthetase III activity was detected. Dietary arginine levels did...

Influence of phenolic compounds on the growth and arginine deiminase system in a wine lactic acid bacterium BJM
Alberto,María R.; Manca de Nadra,María C.; Arena,Mario E..
The influence of seven phenolic compounds, normally present in wine, on the growth and arginine deiminase system (ADI) of Lactobacillus hilgardii X1B, a wine lactic acid bacterium, was established. This system provides energy for bacterial growth and produces citrulline that reacts with ethanol forming the carcinogen ethyl carbamate (EC), found in some wines. The influence of phenolic compounds on bacterial growth was compound dependent. Growth and final pH values increased in presence of arginine. Arginine consumption decreased in presence of protocatechuic and gallic acids (31 and 17%, respectively) and increased in presence of quercetin, rutin, catechin and the caffeic and vanillic phenolic acids (between 10 and 13%, respectively). ADI enzyme activities...

Obese women on a low energy rice and bean diet: effects of leucine, arginine or glycine supplementation on protein turnover BJMBR
Marchini,J.S.; Lambertini,C.R.; Ferriolli,E.; Dutra de Oliveira,J.E..
This study examined if leucine, arginine or glycine supplementation in adult obese patients (body mass index of 33 ± 4 kg/m²) consuming a Brazilian low energy and protein diet (4.2 MJ/day and 0.6 g protein/kg) affects protein and amino acid metabolism. After four weeks adaptation to this diet, each subject received supplements of these amino acids (equivalent to 0.2 g protein kg-1 day-1) in random order. On the seventh day of each amino acid supplementation, a single-dose 15N-glycine study was carried out. There were no significant differences in protein flux, synthesis or breakdown. The protein flux (grams of nitrogen, gN/9 h) was 55 ± 24 during the nonsupplemented diet intake and 39 ± 10, 44 ± 22 and 58 ± 35 during the leucine-, glycine- and...

Plant-mycorrhizal fungi interaction and response to inoculation with different growth-promoting fungi PAB
Vergara,Carlos; Araujo,Karla Emanuelle Campos; Souza,Sônia Regina de; Schultz,Nivaldo; Saggin Júnior,Orivaldo José; Sperandio,Marcus Vinícius Loss; Zilli,Jerri Édson.
Abstract: The symbiotic interaction between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and 70-90% of the plant species is largely studied, but ectomycorrhizal fungi, Piriformospora indica, Trichoderma sp., and dark septate endophytes (DSE), also establish beneficial interactions with plants. Despite this, the joint discussion on the biochemical, physiological, and molecular aspects of nutrient transfer, mainly from the extraradical mycelium (ERM) to the plant, is still limited. The objective of this review is to present biochemical, physiological, and molecular approaches to the plant-AMF interaction, as well as to analyze the response of plants to inoculations with different growth-promoting fungi. Here, are highlighted the characteristics of the H+-ATPases and...

Regulating Effect Of Carnosine And /Or L- Arginine On The Expression Of Inflammatory Molecules Induced Nephropathy In The Hypoxic Rat Model BABT
Al-Rasheed,Nouf M.; Fadda,Laila; Mohamed,Azza M; Attia,Hala A.; Al-Rasheed,Nawal M..
This study aimed to explore the effective role of carnosine and /or L- arginine in down regulation of the inflammatory molecule expression caused renal damage in response to sodium nitrite (NaNO2) induced hypoxia in rats . NaNO2 was administered subcutaneously (s.c.) to rats as a single dose (60 mg/kg body weight ). L-arginine (200mg/Kg body weight) and carnosine (250 mg/ Kg body weight ) were administered (i.p.) as a single dose , 24 h before NaNO2 injection. The results revealed that pre- administration of arginine and /or carnosine to NaNO2 hypoxic rats, significantly modulated the increases in serum markers of renal function (creatinine and urea) as well as the decrease in hemoglobin (Hb) level versus hypoxic rats. The two agents each alone or in a...

tlpA gene expression is required for arginine and bicarbonate chemotaxis in Helicobacter pylori Biol. Res.
Cerda,Oscar A; Núñez-Villena,Felipe; Soto,Sarita E; Ugalde,José Manuel; López-Solís,Remigio; Toledo,Héctor.
About half of the human population is infected with Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium causing gastritis, peptic ulcer and progression to gastric cancer. Chemotaxis and flagellar motility are required for colonization and persistence of H. pylori in the gastric mucus layer. It is not completely clear which chemical gradients are used by H. pylori to maintain its position. TlpA, a chemotaxis receptor for arginine/ bicarbonate, has been identified. This study aimed to find out whether tlpA gene expression is required for the chemotactic response to arginine/bicarbonate. Wild-type motile H. pylori ATCC 700392 and H. pylori ATCC 43504, a strain having an interrupted tlpA gene, were used. Also, a tlpA-knockout mutant of H. pylori 700392 (H. pylori 700-tlpA::cat)...

In this study, the effect of arginine (Arg) of the NaCl induced growth inhibition was examined for Sta. carnosus and P.acidilactici which isolated from the commercial starter culture of fermented sausage. When Arg and/or NaCl were added to MRS broth and cultured with shaking, the differences were not recorded in the broth pH,the nitrate reduction activity, and the protein degradation activity. However, the viable count of both strains had decreased by adding NaCl. The addition of Arg has increased the number of recovered cell and it was remarkable in Sta.carnosus. Arg added broth was metabolized by both strain, the content of Arg in broth was decreased, especially it was disappeared in cultured broth of Sta.carnosus. SEM photographs showed an enlarged and...
